香港街名

Cool, “七月專題:接龍估香港街名” is quite a neat game that also brings up our shared memories of Hong Kong.

Like most things I do, I ended up learning a thing or two with them. In this case, I searched and found a partial list of streets and roads in Hong Kong in Wikipedia. But to my surprised and disappointment, there isn’t a Chinese version of this page!  :(

So may be one day, some Chinese writing Wikipedia editors will take up the effort to add a 中文 page for streets and roads in Hong Kong. If I live in HK or care more, I might, but I don’t. Oh well.

P.S. Wikipedia is a volunteer-based endeavor and the information in an entry varies. When the Canadian author Carol Shields (The Stone DiariesLarry’s Party, etc) passed away in 2003, I added some information to her English Wikipedia page. And now, comparing her English and French page, the amount of content in them are quite different. Of course, sometimes it just take one person to make an effort to put something useful up on the Wikipedia.

I use Google Map, but the streets names are often shown in English. Quite often, I have to guess the Chinese names, do a Google search and hope for the best.

    Hi Haricot,

I was more commenting on the fact that no one in HK cared enough to create a Chinese version of the street names Wikipedia entry.

I have a suggestion if you are trying to find the Chinese street names when you only have the English name. I had no idea what is Apliu Street. So I used Google Translate

to find that it is 鴨寮街 !
(sorry, you have to copy and paste the link to try it)

You may be surprised how a translator is so smart? But what Google is doing is statistical translation.

So Sandy Lam gets you 林憶蓮!
