From Wall Street Journal,
Local democracy leader Martin Lee said Saturday that he had been the target of an attempted assassination plot that was foiled last year by Hong Kong police.
Mr. Lee, the founder of Hong Kong’s Democratic Party and a longtime figurehead of the territory’s democratic movement, said two men – including at least one from mainland China – were arrested last August, during this city’s legislative elections. Mr. Lee, who at 70 years old did not seek re-election, campaigned on behalf of other pro-democratic candidates.
It’s unclear what the motive behind the alleged assassination attempt was, and Mr. Lee declined to speculate on the possible reason for the alleged attack. “I haven’t done anything that would generate this sort of anger,” he said during a press conference Saturday at his law office.
A spokesman for the police said that authorities arrested two men, aged 49 and 50, last August. According to police, one of the men was charged with illegally possessing firearms and ammunition with intent to harm others. Police said a Hong Kong court had scheduled a hearing on June 16, and declined to comment further on the case.
