When I tried to design an icon for 兩周一聚, in my mind, I thought the key idea was “聚”, it was the gather/gathering. Too bad the Chinese word “聚” is much too complex for a 16×16 icon. So I fell back to letter “g” for “gather”.
Instead of using the simple letter “g”, I came up with the idea of breaking apart and pulling components from each of the four Chinese words 兩周一聚 to design the letter “g”.
- The word “兩”: I used it for decoration as I knew it would be too small to show in the icon but would still contribute to the icon.
- The word “周”: I thought of using the “口” component to make the circular shape in the “g” very early on.
- The word “一”: I simply turned it in at an angle to make the right edge of the letter “g”.
- The word “聚”: I used one of the bottom left strokes of the word “聚” to make the bottom of the letter “g”.
The following is the letter “g” after unneeded parts in the above picture have been “cleaned up”.
To add some colors, I picked the colors red and green for “紅男綠女”. This red color was picked from one of the reds in the red lipstick color in 揚眉女子的”化妝桌上 之五” picture. And this green was picked from one of the green in 周游’s plant in her blog header photo.
I have also thickened the strokes to make them stand out more.
While the above story may sound lovely and thoughtful but I have to say the final resulted 16×16 icon looks remarkably unimpressive and “not that pretty” (at all). Here is what the 16×16 icon looks like,
I hope what I have done here have inspired better designers to come up with more interesting and effective icons.
This 兩周一聚 icon design exercise was very enjoyable to me and gave me a needed excuse to step away from my investigation of a technical patent application (for tar sands oil extraction) and other fun stuff that one who has too much time may do. (smile)
