Lara Logan thought she was going to die in Tahrir Square when she was sexually assaulted by a mob on the night that Hosni Mubarak’s government fell in Cairo.
Ms. Logan, a CBS News correspondent, was in the square preparing a report for “60 Minutes” on Feb. 11 when the celebratory mood suddenly turned threatening. She was ripped away from her producer and bodyguard by a group of men who tore at her clothes and groped and beat her body. “For an extended period of time, they raped me with their hands,” Ms. Logan said in an interview with The New York Times. She estimated that the attack involved 200 to 300 men.
Ms. Logan, who returned to work this month, is expected to speak at length about the assault on the CBS News program “60 Minutes” on Sunday night.
Her experience in Cairo underscored the fact that female journalists often face a different kind of violence. While other forms of physical violence affecting journalists are widely covered — the traumatic brain injury ’suffered by the ABC News anchor Bob Woodruff in Iraq in 2006 was a front-page story at that time — sexual threats against women are rarely talked about within journalistic circles or in the news media. 年輕時剛從事新聞工作不久，滿腔熱情，見到不平的事，或自己無法苟同的意見，就總是忍不住要開罵。那時有一位前輩對我說，新聞工作的第一規條，就是永遠不要同比你銷量少或影響力低的報刊筆戰，尤其不要反駁低水準的文章。
這是我一生筆耕都謹記的信條。因此我極少與人筆戰，年輕時去挑戰的都是比我有名望的作家，他們很少回應，大概也是同一路數。早前一時不慎，拿左報一篇罵我沒有「中國人味道」的文章，來借題發揮一下。我本不看這些無聊的黨文章，只是一個老友覺得有趣給我傳來，於是就其題目略提一下。大概這份左報作者發現居然有人看那些本來只是寫來交差的文字，於是大受鼓舞，罵出癮來了。連篇累牘地罵個不停。老友繼續傳來，我只看兩眼，已覺無聊，深感自文革以來，中共批鬥的紅衞兵式文風依舊。這些文字基本上不是以理服人，而是一味辱罵與恐嚇。在文革時代，這種文章雖無法說服卻至少還可以壓服，但現在即使在大陸，這種壓服的文章也失效了，更何況在仍有言論自由的香港，相信這種批鬥文章只會賠上自己報紙的信譽與銷量。我得到的教訓是：對這種文章略提一下都會上當。
不過卻引起有心的讀友關注。區先生來信說，「我相信您會時常因為發表這些觀點而引來無數巨大壓力，但請不要放棄（我非常自私的請求）。所以速寫這電郵、給您少少的 Moral Support。」非常感謝。其實我沒有受什麼壓力，在香港仍有法律保障之下，這些辱罵與恐嚇對我來說只是「得啖笑」。請放心，我只要還在寫，就不會扭曲自己。
Went to check out Calgary Farmers’ Market at its new location this past weekend and I am happy to see the market back in business. At the same time, I wasn’t alone in noticingtheparkingproblem as I ended up parking further away to avoid the lineup. Mind you, I was a bit surprised to find a gun store/shooting range next door from the Farmers’ Market ! When reporting about the parking situation, CTV Calgary even has this bit (emphasis added),
“At the shooting range next door, the owner says it’s been a little tough having to watch over their designated parking spots.
“We’re trying to police politely our stalls. I mean we don’t want to get into a confrontation over parking but because our members, especially the membership that come in, they’re carrying firearms, they’re coming here to shoot so we want them to be with the firearms a short a distance as possible,” says JR Cox.”
“Demonstrators all over the world were sitting outside Chinese embassies on Sunday demanding the release of the detained Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.
Hundreds of protestors brought chairs onto the street tocall for the immediate release of Ai, and in support of the rights of all Chinese artists.
In Hong Kong there were scuffles as 150 protestors came up against lines of police, with reports of at least one detention. In Berlin, about 200 people took part in a largely silent protest. There was also a gathering outside the Chinese embassy in London.”
You have spent a lot of time with Ai Weiwei over the last couple of years, during which time he has been increasingly publicly critical of the Chinese regime. Could you describe the issues about which he has been most vocal?
Ai’s denunciation of the Olympic Games and the Olympic stadium as the “false smile” of an authoritarian regime shed light on Weiwei’s activism in China, but the issue that he was most vocal about — and where he inserted himself into the Chinese conscience — was his citizen’s investigation into the deaths of more than 5,000 schoolchildren in poorly constructed schools during the May 2008 earthquake in Sichuan. Over his Twitter feed, Ai solicited over 70 volunteers to independently record the names, ages, classrooms and villages of the dead. Read the rest of this entry »

The Hong Kong made soft porn 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy bills itself as the first stereoscopic 3D erotica. Having watched the film’s 2D trailers and news coverage, I am betting the film are constantly throwing things at the viewers to make sure they know they are watching a 3D film. Of course, being a soft core porn, the 3D breasts are hopefully plentiful.
Judging on the ticket sales numbers and international pre-sales, the producer and money man Stephen Shiu Jr. is already thinking ofa sequel.
