以上 是 本 星 期 一 ， 我 在 卡 加 里 的 墓 園 ， 將 麗 儀 骨 灰 安 葬 時 ， 所 講 的 話 。 我 盡 量 想 平 靜地 說 ， 但 仍 然 哽 咽 難 言 。 那 個 安 放 骨 灰 的 小 棺 蓋 上 ， 緩 緩 放 進 泥 土 的 深 坑 中 。 送 行的 約 二 十 位 親 友 ， 在 上 面 扔 下 白 玫 瑰 鮮 花 ， 然 後 覆 蓋 上 泥 土 。 我 用 手 帕 捂 住 臉 面 ，旁 邊 長 得 比 我 高 的 男 外 孫 ， 紅 了 眼 睛 。 … … 在 我 們 心 裏 ， 她 永 遠 活 着 。

鬼馬神仙車

昨天上午我開車到城外。當我開車開到時速八十公里以上時，汽車開始有點震動，令我有點害怕。因此，我謹慎地慢駛。

午餐後，這個問題神奇地消失了！你知道這是為什麼嗎？

男兒淚，再見

晚了，所以我這一篇文章大部份會用英文寫。

今早，可以送李太最後一程是我的榮幸。The weather this morning was a bit cold (about -10C) but sunny. In a chat before actual ceremony started, I saw 李生 was still very saddened but I understand getting back to the usual work routine has helped him cope with the lost.

Once everyone arrived, we took a 20 seconds short drive from the funeral home to the burial area and then walk to the final burial site which has a nice view of downtown and also a wonderful view of the mountain.

Once arrived and feeling the open space, the cold, and the bright sun, I told a friend standing next to me that I am saddened of the passing of Mrs. Li. as I know Mr. and Mrs. Li were a very close couple. They looked so happy together when we used to have dim sum with both of them.

When the ceremony started, the usually eloquent 李生 tried hard to say a few words while holding back his 男兒淚. I was very touched. Here is something 李生 previously wrote for 李太,

「 結 緣 逾 半 世 紀 情 人 妻 子 終 身 良 朋 忍 令 天 凡 永 隔 ；
牽 手 近 一 甲 子 說 事 談 心 朝 夕 侶 伴 只 餘 舊 夢 縈 懷 。 」

After the beautiful ceremony, a friend suggested to go for dim sum lunch while 李生’s family and a few friends had to go to work or school.

In our 2+ hours long dim sum brunch, our discussions warmed up quickly as usual. 李生 and attending guests turned to discuss various new or old news in Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan. I always see this type of lunch gatherings as great ways to learn from 李生 and other guests. I feel good, as I get older, I am able to “hold my own” and share my insights as one of the participants.

So, for a few hours, everyone seemed to be talking as usual and 講東講西 plus enjoying the pretty nice dim sum. The sadness only returned after the lunch when a friend mentioned that she was sick at our last dim sum and couldn’t come out for the last gathering which would turned out to be 李太’s last dim sum with us.

今天早上，我也流了一些男兒淚。

再見李太。

加拿大發現源出自中國的網絡間諜活動

From CBC news (video clips available), “Canadian research uncovers cyber espionage network – Malware-spreading computers based mainly in China” (emphasis added)

Canadian researchers have uncovered an internet spy network, based mostly in China, that has hacked into computers owned by governments and private organizations in 103 countries.

The findings released Sunday follow a 10-month investigation by researchers from the Ottawa-based think tank SecDev Group and the Munk Centre for International Studies at the University of Toronto.

The group was initially asked to look into allegations that the Chinese were hacking into computers set up by the Tibetan exile community, but their work eventually led them to a much wider network of compromised computers.

Once the hackers infiltrated the systems, they installed malware — software that sends and receives data. By doing this, they were able to gain control of the electronic mail server computers of the Dalai Lama’s organization, the group said.

最後一程

I’ve known 李生 and 李太 for a few years now. And they were such a loving and lovely couple.

I was deeply saddened of 李太’s passing and since then I’ve learned a lot more about the eventful lives of 李生 and 李太. As an acquaintance of 李生 and 李太 it is mine and us friends’ honour to be with 李生 and see 李太 on her final journey later today.

Seeing the passing of 李太 and also moms of two different friends, it makes me treasure my time more. In life, we are somewhat limited by our life circumstances but I try to live life to the fullest. While I may not be successful all the times, I do try to make the world a better place in the smallest way I can.

我的天馬行空:

OK, my ambitious topic has at least partially put off the above two writers and probably more. And for that, I apologize. And I feel sorry for picking a topic that readandeat and others may think as “八股文章” topic.

Now, why 貪靚出事?

Well, this long topic name all came from “conventional wisdom” and then “傳統智慧” and then I couldn’t resist adding “傳統” & “Convention” as well.

It seemed beautiful to lay them out like a string of creative seeds. “傳統 & 傳統智慧 / Convention & Conventional Wisdom“. Of course, I was blinded by the beauty &”靚”. (OK, pretty &”靚”.)

Finally, we have a fun group here. I haven’t had someone laughing at my name (Kempton) like readandeat (inspired by 周游’s good guess) since high school. Oh mine, my classmates did that in their teens! With age, I don’t get that kind of humour any more. So readandeat, you are hilarious and I thank you for reminding me of my youth. :)

林行止先生: 出類拔萃的作家,報人

當朋友轉寄林行止先生被授予香港大學名譽社會科學博士學位的消息給我時，我立即想到引用上述Arthur Miller的話。

林行止先生絕對是一個出類拔萃的作家和報人。讓我借用我非常同意維基百科的話，

林行止有「香港第一健筆」的稱號，他在《信報》撰寫的《林行止專欄》與《政經短評》，分析評論香港以至世界政經形勢。林行止善於把艱深複雜的經濟理論，以淺白的文字描述與分析；他寫的文章內容不限於政經，也包括古今中外、各類嗜好、所見所聞。

感謝林先生多年來有見地的見解。我在這裡向林行止先生恭喜賀喜。

Dr Lam founded the Hong Kong Economic Journal in 1973 and the Hong Kong Economic Journal Monthly in 1977. For 25 years, he wrote a daily column, ‘Politics and Economics Review’, in which he analysed Hong Kong and international affairs. Dr Lam’s articles are widely acclaimed for being objective, insightful and well-argued. Since 1997, ‘Lam Hang Chi’s Column’ has seen him writing about an even wider range of subjects, including economic theories that interest him, and which he hopes the reading public will find educational and interesting too. His writing has been anthologized into over 100 books in Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Mainland. Dr Lam was awarded an OBE in 1991 and an honorary degree from Lingnan University in 1999.

In recognition of his contributions to the journalism sector in Hong Kong, HKU will confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa.

Citation

I believe that Mr Lam Shan Muk will be the first illegal immigrant to be awarded an honorary doctorate by this University! Since his unconventional arrival, Mr Lam has, of course, risen to become one of Hong Kong’s most famous and respected writers and journalists. Of the profession of journalists, Warren Buffet wrote:

`The smarter that journalists are, the better off society is. For, to a degree, people read the press to inform themselves and the better the teacher the better the student body’.

Through his writing Mr Lam Shan Muk has proved himself a remarkably able teacher and Hong Kong society, together with his Mainland and Taiwanese readers, have greatly benefited over many years from his enlightening editorials and articles.

「兩周一聚」(十一): 傳統 & 傳統智慧 / Convention & Conventional Wisdom

傳統

「尊師重道」和「尊敬父母」是一般華人的傳統。在學校聽老師的課，老師永遠是對的，學生瘋狂抄筆記是常事。在家裡，無論父母說什麼，子女都不應該頂嘴。「駁嘴駁舌」/「頂撞」父母/「包拗頸」都是「尊敬父母」的子女不應做的事。
但我認為這些「傳統」在我們的新時代新世界是需要更新的。對老師和父母有禮貌是應該的。但孩子們也不應該害怕對老師和父母提問，甚至指出老師和父母的錯誤。我相信，這些良好的學習態度會對孩子將來的學習和工作都有幫助。

Convention

Convention doesn’t need to be old. In fact the conventions for emails, sms, and twitter are new and they can be very confusing to people who are not accustomed to them. For example, lol can mean “Lots of Love” or more likely “Laugh out Loud”. brb can mean “Be Right Back”. ttyl, omg, and many others are all new acronyms. When these acronyms creep into students’ school work, teachers will need to remind students that these kind of acronyms are not part of acceptable “English”. I believe similar problems are happening to some Chinese students in Hong Kong when they write Chinese composition (中文作文) using sms style Chinese short forms.

傳統智慧

中藥，有些人說是中國人幾千年的傳統智慧積累而成的。小時候我多些用中藥，但我成年後就很少用中藥了。因為我認為有時中藥很難知道它是真還是假的。更重要的是，我認為中藥缺乏有乏系統的科學實驗和研究。可幸的是，香港貿易發展局的「國際現代化中醫藥及健康產品展覽會暨會議」等等活動對提升中藥的國際認可是有幫助的。

這裡有一些美國國立衛生研究院(NIH)的中藥/草藥資料供您參考，

亞洲人參(Asian Ginseng)，甘菊(Chamomile)，松果菊(Echinacea)，大蒜(Garlic)，生薑(Ginger)，綠茶(Green Tea)

Conventional Wisdom

By now, you may realize that I have some reservations in blindly following “convention (傳統)” and “conventional wisdom (傳統智慧)”. Let me conclude this post by talking about some investment conventional wisdom. “Buy Low sell High” (低買高賣) is a conventional wisdom that people often say but practice much less often. What happens a lot more is “Buy High sell Higher” (高買更高賣) when the market is in a general “up trend”. In fact, when the market is generally rising, an “investor” can pick a stock randomly and still end up making some money.

But as the recent financial meltdown has shown us, when people were panicking, they sell first and ask question later. Which is why people ended up buying high and selling lower as they dump their stock to get out. Or keeping and stuck with a formerly high price stock (which may not be a totally bad thing, it depends).

As I try to say indirectly in this post (買賣搖錢樹=投資股票的十個理由), investing in stocks is no different from investing in a partial ownership of a company. And when a well run company’s stock price get severely discounted, it may, after careful study and analysis, be a good opportunity to “Buy Low” in hope of “Sell High” in the future some years down the road.

“Buy low” when everyone is scared is easier said then done but like any investment with a healthy return, it takes time and careful study & analysis. While the stock market may still go lower, the business world will get better one day. As a wise investor once put it “be greedy when others are fearful”. And in the last few months, the investment world had been fearful and shocked beyond believe. Wishing you the ability to make wise investment decision and luck. 祝你有慧眼和好運。

同學們今天讀赫師的《價格理論》，不要相信書中說的任何話。赫師當年沒有這樣要求過。他隻是要求同學考慮，要求同學衡量。他永遠是說，這裡有一個觀點，邏輯推理是如此這般，支持的假設例子是這樣，實例是那樣，反証的例子同學可以想到嗎？在課堂上他喜歡提問：「這裡有一個問題不知你們怎樣看？」問題提出后，他游目四顧地等回應。見不到回應，會問我：「史提芬，你有意見嗎？」答得對他鼓勵，答得新奇他贊賞，認為答錯了他要你多想一下。永遠不會像我那樣，說：「蠢到死！」

有一次，赫師教投資風險，他問：「資料顯示，結了婚的人較多購買人壽保險，那是為什麼？」當時在座的同學不少是上上之選，知道結了婚的人責任增加，風險的代價上升了，所以偏於買保險。我見赫師問得那樣傻，要跟他搞笑一下，說：「因為出售人壽保險的經紀不斷地到婚姻注冊處查詢，知道你新婚就來麻煩你！」同學們大笑。赫師等笑聲停下來，評曰：「你說的有理，保險經紀真的很麻煩。」同學們又再笑起來了。是這樣的氣氛教出一個張五常。同學們今天讀赫師的《價格理論》，不要相信，要考慮，要衡量，而更重要的是不停地提出問題，找其它同學或老師出氣吧。

台北 遠 不 及 香 港 般 的 繁 囂 ， 林 先 生 的 故 居 雖 建 在 半 山 ， 眼 底 可 沒 有 繁 華 的 景 觀 ， 有 的是 田 園 的 恬 靜 。 上 山 的 路 途 經 雙 溪 錢 穆 先 生 的 故 居 、 故 宮 博 物 館 — — 及 國 家 安 全 部。
